I was unable to directly upload the video into my blog by clicking the video option when you create a post. Hence, I decided to use a website called Screencast.com.

After clicking on the link, the video should appear on your screen like this:

I hope you enjoy and learned!

Recommended Readings

Hello reader,
I have attached some recommended readings if you are interested in learning more about urban disasters and the case study of the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. I decided to create this document with the format of an annotated bibliography because it not only organizes the content in an elegant way, but gives you a brief summary and a short evaluation of each work.

I hope you decide to read some of the journal articles and books I cite or even find yourself creating an annotated bibliography of your own. If the second is the case , I recommend this great tutorial:

Enjoy!
Best,
-C.

A Case Study

Hello reader,

I decided to include a real case study that can help you understand what are the consequences of an urban disaster in a specific state. Haiti might never be the same, but we must think of the 2010 earthquake and disaster as a lesson to be learned from. Urban Disasters cannot be dealt with in the same manner in every single state around the world. There is a need to move from mitigation to preventive preparation. There is a need to aid the states that have been affected while maintaining strategies that can move towards self development and not dependency on international organizations or other states. There is a need for change in the humanitarian and development fields.

The Occasional Problem

Hello reader,

I really tried to post my table of urban disasters from 2010-2013 with Scribd.com. I thought it would work since I was able to post my PowerPoint using this great website. However, it does not work as well with Excel documents. Thus, I have attached some photos of the spreadsheet that I managed to capture using the "snipping tool" from my computer's programs.
The images may look small, but if you click on them Blogger immediately zooms in and you can have a better look.

Enjoy.

Hello reader,
Narrowing the scope of the topics that interest me is difficult. My topics of interest range from structural inequalities to international development to sociology of poverty to humanitarian affairs and more! I guess you can see that I love research. I love knowledge. I love the fact that each day I have the opportunity to learn and discover more about the world that surrounds me.

The purpose of this blog is to share travelling information on a specific subject. I will help my readers gain information literacy on Urban Disasters. Throughout the next couple of days I will be posting posts on urban disasters and the case study of the Haiti 2010 Earthquake. If you become a reader, I hope you enjoy.

Best,
C.

PS: This word cloud depicts how all of these topics travel through my mind. The image may look small, but if you click on it Blogger immediately zooms in and you can have a better look.

Who am I ?

Hello! My name is Chabelly Aimi Acosta. Born in New York and raised in Dominican Republic, my parents’ homeland, I am a first generation Dominican-American. Growing up in Dominican Republic showed me high levels of inequalities, extreme poverty and the reality of life in a developing state. However, these same life experiences made me passionate and dedicated to social development, justice and international affairs. During eleven years, my family and I helped organize medical missions and distributed food, toys and clothing in underdeveloped areas with the Ministry of the Holy Spirit, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

I moved back to New York in 2011, when I was awarded an undergraduate degree scholarship from St. John’s University. Living back in New York, I assisted the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs at Fordham University as a research intern and performed a comprehensive data research and literature review of the humanitarian response to urban disasters. I graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2015 with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Legal Studies. Consequently, I decided to follow my passion and continued my education by pursuing a master’s degree in Global Development and Social Justice at St. John's University. I yearn to learn of the structural problems that challenge our world, to help find effective and evolving solutions through research and work and to initiate discourses on cooperation and global development in the international community.

I started my master's program in June 2015 and traveled to Italy and Germany for the first time. It was an amazing experience and a dream come true. Currently, I am working as the graduate and research assistant of the cohort 10 in the program.
